Flash 10.1 / AIR Mobile: What device do you need?

A while ago, Adobe announced that Flash player 10.1 was coming to Google’s mobile OS Android. I was very happy at the moment: finally I could start building some nice mobile apps using Flex and AIR. A couple of weeks later however, Adobe said that they were not going to support “old devices” like my HTC Hero that’s only 6 months old now for performance reasons. So essentially, i’m fucked and need to buy a new phone again if I want to do some mobile development. Even if you just purchased the new HTC Legend…start crying right now, break your piggy bank and return to the store to buy a new phone: it won’t support Flash 10.1 and AIR.

So what do you need to run this new Flash Player 10.1?

Basically you just need a phone that has a chip that’s using the ARMv7 instruction set, and not the old “legacy” ARMv6 instruction set. To be fair, I understand Adobe in their decision….look at the future and don’t look back, new mobile devices are introduced every day and it won’t be long before we will be talking about the good old days of the HTC Hero and similar phones.

Examples of phones that are equipped with a fancy chip that can handle Flash 10.1 and AIR:

  • Google Nexus One
  • HTC Desire

  • My pick for now is the HTC Desire, specs are the same as the nexus one, but the Desire has the HTC Sense UI that I like so much…..my crappy old HTC Hero has that too!
